Course details
University of Queensland's provisional-entry pathway provides school leavers a guaranteed route into postgraduate medicine by completing an approved undergraduate then their four-year Doctor of Medicine. In contrast to the standard MD flow, students complete the UCAT instead of the GAMSAT and do not need to reapply after they've finished their first degree.
As a conditional offer, students must maintain a strong academic standing to keep their positions. This includes a GPA of at least 5.0/7, passing all prerequisite courses, and completing your undergraduate within its minimum time requirement.

What is provisional entry to medicine at the University of Queensland?+
Selected at Year 12 on your ATAR, UCAT and an MMI, you enrol in an approved UQ bachelor's degree holding a conditional place in the Doctor of Medicine. You progress into the MD with no second competitive round, provided you finish the bachelor in minimum time, reach a GPA of 5.0/7, and pass the named MD-prerequisite courses.
Does UQ provisional entry require the UCAT?+
Yes. Among applicants who clear the ATAR 95 gate, the UCAT alone ranks who is invited to the MMI, and it also contributes 25% to the provisional-offer score.
What ATAR do I need for UQ provisional entry?+
An adjusted ATAR of 95 is the minimum to be eligible to apply. UQ publishes no cut-off above that; ~99+ is an indicative estimate of where successful applicants land, not an official threshold.
What GPA do I need to progress to the MD?+
You must hold a cumulative GPA of at least 5.0 on a 7-point scale across the first degree, complete it in minimum time, and pass the prerequisite courses. Meet all the conditions and the place converts — there is no second UCAT, GAMSAT or interview round.
Which bachelor's degree do I study first?+
An approved UQ bachelor's degree, with some flexibility in which (for example Biomedical Science or Science). Whichever you choose, you must complete Integrative Cell & Tissue Biology and Systems Physiology within it.
Is there a rural or Indigenous pathway?+
Yes. A Rural Background Sub-Quota reserves 28% of new domestic places and invites rural applicants to the MMI at a lower UCAT bar (1960 vs 2290 general, 2026). Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander applicants are invited on the recommendation of UQ’s ATSI Studies Unit.
How is the provisional offer decided?+
Among interviewed applicants, the provisional offer is a single weighted score: ATAR 25%, UCAT 25%, and the MMI 50% — the heaviest component.
